June 11, 1997.
NBA Finals.
Game 5.
Utah Jazz vs. Chicago Bulls.
Series tied at 2-2.
Michael Jordan has been here before, in a tied series against a worthy opponent. But there was something different about this particular game, now less than 48 hours away. With his head in his hotel bathroom toilet His Airness didn't know how he was going to be able to play this forthcoming game. He seemingly appeared to have contracted a terrible affliction: a stomach flu. And if you have ever suffered from this affliction, you know that all thoughts are expunged, as your body and mind is forced to focus on one thing: survival. And if you know Michael Jordan, you know only one thing matters more to him than survival: winning.
Nobody was prepared for what was about to happen the night of June 11. Not even Michael Jordan could have known. But what happened became the stuff of legend, another notch in the proverbial belt of one of the game's greatest players. With his energy drained and depleting after every jumpshot, his vibrancy and moxie reduced with every rebound and contested shot, MJ summoned just enough power to pull himself up by his bootstraps one more time. And he proceeded to do the impossible. Again.
He scored 38 points en route to a Bulls victory. When the 4th quarter came around, Jordan did what Jordan does. He dazzled. He overcame. He left all witnesses in awe. Again.
As his teammate, Scottie Pippen, came over to congratulate him, Jordan almost fainted in his arms. And this time their roles reversed, and it was Pippen who returned the favor and carried his teammate in a time of need.
And when Michael Jordan walked off the court that day, whether you were a hater or congratulator, the only thought going through every witness' mind was: LEGENDARY.
